Maru Sushi & Grill, Downtown

Detroit’s sushi scene has totally exploded! To celebrate, my friend and I have been making lunch dates to try each and every one.

First up on our sushi tour was Maru Sushi, located a stone’s throw from Campus Martius in the Federal Reserve building.

It’s actually a local chain, with a couple of other locations a couple of hours north and west.

This place is stunning.

I actually love how versatile the space is. We went for a late lunch/early dinner (linner?), but I could totally see myself coming back for cocktails in the evening as they’ve got lots of little booths and nooks that would be great to fill with a group of friends!

Maru actually uses a lot of local fish, and any sushi lover knows just how important it is to order sustainable fish! That being said, they don’t feel constrained to traditions, so you’ll see a lot of creative combinations.

The first thing we got was a hot pot of green tea and the Flaming Crab.

I absolutley loved  the earthy combination of  asparagus and kampyo, a type of Japanese gourd.

We also ordered a bowl of edamame to nibble on while we waited.

You can choose from plain, truffle, or sriracha salt to top it off with. We chose the sriracha option, and was pleasantly surprised at how perfectly balanced the spices were!

Next came Seven Fish Sashimi Salad, and the Maruvelous Roll.

My friend loved the salad, but I thought it was kind of gimmicky. I think I’ll just go with the chef’s sashimi platter next time.

That being said, the sashimi itself was delicious, and we had a great selection!

The Maruvelous roll was, as it’s name suggests, marvelous.

It was a unique mix of tuna, crab, and lobster with avocado, honey wasabi aioli and eel sauce. Let me just repeat that, honey wasabi aioli. You need to try this!

Having feasted quite enough, we also ordered a matcha creme brûlée for dessert.

It was rich and decadent, just as you’d imagine.

This place is on the more expensive side, as are most sushi restaurants. But they’ve got a happy hour from 2:30-5 on weekdays that includes 20% off all sushi rolls, and 20% off for students on Monday & Tuesday!
